In this episode we deal with iFezeka moving again okwesithathu, to Sokhanyo Lower Primary school.

Safika eSokhanyo. Eish, kawu yidown grading yomhlaba mos le. Firstly we move to a lower primary school, which shares a fence with ID Mkhize Secondary School.

Yeses, iID yisecondary and iFezeka has recently been upgraded to a high school, so you can imagine sharing a fence with a secondary school, bra wam.

We compete with these guys as they are the second secondary school apha eGugs and kaloku thina we regard ourselves as the main ouens ekasi.

We beat them at sports, qha bathembele ngoMaquza. Thina we are deep in drama because iFezeka used to produce iplays every year, and this used to draw maximum crowds to the Civic Hall every time.

Fezeka used to give uGibson Kente icompetition. Drama was a big thing ekasi then with outstanding plays like “Buzani ku Bawo” and “Nants’indoda, with outstanding actors like uShweshwe, uErnest Thompson, Gqada and Mawethu Mshudulu, including a host of other actors.

Awu! if these young, unpolished diamonds had the opportunity today, they probably would have been on some of our leading dramas on TV. Ismoko; there was no TV those days, hence the large attendance at these shows.

The motivation behind these plays was utishala uBanzi and the background and choreography(sasi ngayazi ngezo ntsuku) ingu bra Godfrey Mpulu, a renowned artist.

Anyway, ndiyashwaqa ngoku. We heard rumours that we are moving again to a new school. Maar waar? Asithwasi. Nini? Yho, sise hosi. Sazithola okokuba siya e NY2! Phi? Eish, sisuka e3A, ngoku sisiwa kwa Gasela, kwezinye izikoli, sismoko esi. Hayi, kodwa nayo sayilungisa phantsi koRari. OoMapasi, izikoli ezaziwayo, sazilungisa singama Boys aseFezeka. Nobody was threatened, all the girls were safe, amajita abumbene, iziStudy classes in the evening zisafe.

Remember, few, if any of us had umbane at home, so we had to study at school until 9pm in the evening because it was the only place with umbane.

The results of all these efforts were clear, especially with uBiggi, also known as Mr Mama, looking after all those who are studying with umntana ka Mbatsha as the headboy. Fezeka had between 80 and 95 % pass rate then.

On the other hand these sessions served as our political consciousness lessons, led by Patric Ngqukuvana and others. What we thought were Student Christian Movement sessions, were addressed by some of the leading lights in Black Conciousness like ooJustice Gola, Ghost Ndindwa, Vondela Landingwe, nabanye. Hence the eruption of August 11 1976,uMbumbumbu. Yasuka ngoko indaba! This spread all over Cape Town with schools from what was the Coloured Education Department and UCT students joining.

Cape Town became the only place where the uprising were not confined to townships as can be seen in the pictures.

Fezeka, originally founded by concerned educationalists like Mr Ngambu, Mam Soboois, Mr Ndandani and others, became a beacon of hope, because before then one had to go to the homelands if there was no place in Langa High and this encouraged many people lile Tony Yengeni, Wallace Mgoqi, Tito August and many others, to pursue their education nearer to home.

60 years later later, Gugs is proud to have this institution called Fezeka in Fezeka Street, Gugulethu.
