Nurses have a big role to play in our society.

They are usually present from the day a person is born, throughout one’s life and right to the end. They are also able to provide emotional support to anyone in need.

Sister Nomhle Dodi has dedicated her life to this caring profession. She started her nursing career more than 35 years ago and still serves her community with the same dedication and passion.

She is a Clinical Nursing Practitioner at Mfuleni Community Day Centre. The facility sees approximately 9 000 patients per month, which is around 34 patients per nurse a day.

Sister Dodi believes that nursing was a calling for her and she has devoted her life to this physically and emotionally demanding occupation.

She takes pride in her work and always serve her patients as best as she can, with dignity and respect.

“A good nurse is one that cares, is kind, patient, responsible and accountable to her workplace and the community she serves. Nurses must put themselves in the position of the patient to understand them and their situation better,” she explains.

She adds that living out the Western Cape Government Health’s values means that as a nurse, she should always sympathise with the patient, be loving and caring, treat people equally and show dedication in everything that she does.

Sister Dodi says that she would like to see young people taking up nursing as a profession to serve their communities and take the career and service delivery to greater heights.

“They would have to be dedicated and purpose-driven,” she advises.

Sister Dodi’s encouraging message to other nurses is that they remain dedicated and keep providing the best service. She also urges them to take care of their own health.
