A food garden run by women from Khayelitsha is one of the beneficiaries of the Growing Entrepreneurs Agri-Planner programme.

The garden Siyazama Food Garden is situated in Makhaza and was started in 1996 by some community members.

The programme is run by Coronation Fund Managers, an investment company and South African Institute of Entrepreneurship (SAIE).

Siyazama’s coordinator Liziwe Stofile said ever since they were introduced to the programme they have seen improvement in how they operate.

“Before, we did not know that we can make money from the garden and did it for fun. Now the programme has helped us a lot with the business side of it,” she said.

She said they learned how to deal with the market when selling their vegetables and what vegetables to plant and how.

Different people from the programme come to visit them each year to teach them new skills, she said.

Stofile added that there are about 15 people working in the 6 000 m² garden and that they have employed four people. “The garden does not just benefit us, people from the community come and buy from us and we also give vegetables to some old age homes and sick people,” she said.

She said they have learned to plant their garden organically and that the community is slowly understanding what organic planting is because they can tell the difference.

She said they do not face too many challenges but once in a while thieves would break into the garden but not steal any of their vegetables.
