This year marks the 40th anniversary since the demise of a true struggle icon and a son of the soil.

Robert Mangaliso ‘Prof’ Sobukwe was one of the sons of Azania who was often referred to as the ‘Defier of the undefiable’ for daring to challenge apartheid laws.

He came through the ranks of the oldest political movement in Africa, the ANC, and during a time when the ANC Youth League was at its most vibrant youth league.

He parted ways with the ANC after realizing that the struggle was being diverted and was no longer about the true emancipation of the African people.

He stood firm in his belief for the freedom of the people to call their soul their own.

In today’s political scheme, we have leaders who are not selfless but also hell-bent on making sure that their personal interest top their involvement in the Struggle.

We have lost leaders of the calibre of Sobukwe and others who wanted nothing less than the total and absolute freedom for our people.

He envisioned the concept of a United States of Africa, free, from the Cape to Cairo and Morocco to Madagascar.

As we salute Sobukwe, we pray that the soil and sand dunes of our beloved Africa can produce a myriad of many such true leaders to take us forward.

We long for true leaders who will see to it that people’s needs come first.

We need leaders who will serve our nation with great humility. Those who will sacrifice their souls so that each person in Azania feels completely free.

We hope and pray that all the true sons and daughters of the soil of immediate past are watching over us, singing, in the knowledge that they have paved the way for us to be free. Izwe Lethu!
