To grow support for the globally popular English Premier League, football legends spent last Tursday mingling with fans at the Gugulethu mall.

Former Bafana and Leeds United Captain Lucas Radebe and former Arsenal goalkeeper Peter Schmeichel took a moment to take pictures with locals and the English Premier League trophy.

The event was a build up to the weekend’s Ultimate Fan Park Experience at Camps Bay High School.

The fan experience football lovers got to watch live matches of the EPL games on Saturday and Sunday.

According to the Barclays Absa public relations officer, Siyabonga Mahlaba, this event was to bring together the fans of the league and to enjoy the game with former stars in the midst.

He also said that it was also crucial for them to see locals getting in on the action.

“We all know that the EPL is the most followed league but not in South African townships like Gugulethu. So we are trying to bring it close and what better way to do that than to bring celebrated football legends like Lucas Radebe,” said Mahlaba.

Locals were also treated to a free shuttle from Khayelitsha and Gugulethu to Camps Bay. Radebe said that it was important for such events to be brought in the townships.

“We all know that the biggest following for football in this country is in the townships and the more locals are exposed to the EPL the better the chances of them following it,” said Radebe.
