Somali shop owners are doing their best to assist in the fight against the Covid-19 pandemic by donating food parcels to the communities they serve.

The Somali Business Community (SBC) which has spaza shops in most townships donated food parcels to 200 families in different areas in Khayelitsha on Thursday 23 April.

SBC chair Maha Omar Abdi said they are helping the poor in different townships in the province. “We saw a need to help people that live from hand to mouth because they are the ones who are struggling the most during this lockdown,” he said.

He said most people can no longer afford to go to their shops and buy food because they do not have an income.

Abdi added that the same community they are trying to support is the same community that supports their businesses and they felt obliged to give back.

Ward 89 councillor Monde Nqulwana said they are happy with what the SBC is doing for the residents.

“It is government’s job to help the needy in such trying times but nothing is being done, we are grateful to the Somalis for what they are doing,” he said.

Nqulwana said the food parcels will also help with reducing the number of people on the streets who have to go to shops to buy food and that way the spread of the virus will be minimal.

One of the beneficiaries Nomonde Tyalimpi said she is happy to have been identified as one of the people in need of such relief.

She said it is good that the shop owners in their communities show that they do care for them because they know they support them every day.

Another beneficiary Sakhiwo Mthuzula said it is good to see that the Somalis appreciate the support they give them when they buy from their shops.

He added that it is a good way of giving back to the community.
