Dedication and love are the key to the success of Manzomthombo Senior Secondary School in Mfuleni.

The school is well known in sport and has a great record academically. Last year Mazomthombo obtained about 91,4 % pass rate on matric results.

And out of 216 learners who sat for the final examinations last year, about 86% qualified for a Bachelors degree, 61% for Diplomas and 44% for school leaving certificates.

Deputy principal Marianna Ferreira praised the staff members for being committed to their work.

“We have dedicated teachers. We ensure that our class numbers are manageable to be able to monitor each and every leaner. And also we have intensive programs that assist learners on their studies.

She added that the biggest class has 41 learners.

She also encouraged learners to attend extra classes.

“We not only focus on matriculants, but ensure that we start from the lower grades to build a solid foundation so that when they come to Grade 12 they should know what to expect,” she said.

Ferreira admitted that the school didn’t reach its target last year. “Even though we did well on the matric results but we failed to reach our target, which was 93%.

“With the assistance of School Based Support Team(SBST) which supports learners with reading, writing and health issues, we have managed to be where we are, as far as our results go,” she said.

Explaining how the school balanced both sport and academia, teacher and netball coach Frank Xaba said a healthy body makes healthy mind.

“If the teacher loves and enjoys what he or she is doing, the learners will emulate him and feel motivated,” he said.

Xaba emphasised that not every learner will excel at academic level, but with the support of sport, they can be somewhere in life. “We are well known in sport, locally and nationally. We participate in many tournaments and have won accolades and trophies for our efforts, thank to dedicated teams of learners and educators.

Last year, the soccer u17 boys were champions in the Nashua Champions held at the Groote Schuur High School grounds in Rondebosch, and the u15 boys soccer team were runners up in the Mary Burton tournament held at the Langa Stadium.

And the netball team u15 became champions in the National Top School’s Tournament held in Boksburg in 2016. in 2017 they were runners up in MF Tournament in Vaal.
