Steenberg United ensured that they will have another crack at securing a spot in next season’s National First Division, after securing top honours in the ABC Motsepe Western Cape league over the weekend.

The winner of each provincial ABC Motsepe division, which contains 16 teams each, advances to the ABC Motsepe National play-offs to compete for the two available spots in the National First Division.

Steenberg United won their final match of the season, hammering Ocean View 6-0 on Saturday 11 May, to post a total of 69 points in their 30 league games.

This ensured that The Magic, based in Pinelands, would end second, despite their 1-0 win over Batalion FC, on 67.

In other results, Santos secured a narrow victory over Maitland-based FN Rangers at the Santos Academy in Lansdowne, which meant they finished the season in eighth position. The public draw of the ABC Motsepe National play-offs is conducted by the South African Football Association and the ABC Motsepe foundation to determine the two groups and fixtures which are played over a week-long period.

The top two finishers from the two groups advance to the finals and gain automatic promotion to the National First Division (NFD). Winners of the finals walk away with R1m with the losing finalists receiving R500 000.

Results:

Ajax Cape Town Youth 6, Mbekweni Cosmos 2;

Steenberg United FC 6, Ocean View FC 0;

Zizwe United 2, Morning Stars FC 1

Jomo Powers 1, Grassy Park United 1;
