Suspects arrested minutes after committing robbery

Nyanga police have arrested two suspects, moments after robbing a man of his wallet and cellphone on the R300 in Heinz Park.

According to the police, the man was accosted by the culprits while he was walking on the side of the road.

“Members of the Stabilization Unit were on patrol in Sheffield Road when they were stopped by a man who claimed to have been robbed a few minutes earlier.

Police followed up and were tipped where they could find the culprits.

Indeed, police found the suspects and the victim pointed them out,” said police spokesperson Captain Ntomboxolo Sitshitshi.

She said that the victim’s cellphone was found in possession of the suspects and a firearm alleged to have been used in the robbery.

“Only the wallet that could not be recovered. The suspects, aged between 27 and 29 years respectively, were arrested and appeared in Athlone Magistrate Court, to face charges of robbery and the possession of an unlicensed firearm,” she said.

.Nyanga police have revealed that they have apprehended more than 300 suspects in the past week in the policing cluster. The cluster consists of the following police stations: Nyanga, Bishop Lavis, Elsies River, Gugulethu, Manenberg and Philippi East.

According to Sitshitshi the arrests were a result of various operations in the past week.
