A local DJ is hoping his new monthly mixtape show will establish his brand having been an entertainer for close to a decade.

Buhle Tshangela, 23, has started his Kitchen Gqom mixes programme in which he releases an hour’s compilation of the current and bubbling songs.

Tshangela, known as Dj Mowie from Nyanga, said that the idea began when he visited East London and he had to connect his sound system at his home to a DJ.

“So I started think that it would be cool if I started making my mixes from the kitchen. I’m a gqom DJ and I have been one since I heard songs by O21 records.

I am planning of growing the following, invite others to my kitchen and provide great music,” said Mowie.

He said his journey into the music business started when he and a childhood friend caught a lucky break.

“When I was 14 in my neighbourhood of Zwelitsha there was a party and the Dj that was hired to play there didn’t show up and we were asked to play at that party.

Luckily we had speakers and a laptop so we used DJying software to mix the songs together and we got paid. At the time that was amazing so we decided to take it seriously.

We then started availing ourselves for parties and dj at local pubs even though w were young,” he said.

He also established himself as to go to guy for music entertainment at his high school, Rhodes.

“After finishing matric I then worked for a while then I decided to take music as my only way of living so I have been gigging and also hosting my own events,” he said.

He said that some of his highlights including perfoming at the biggest events in the city such as Ipotsoyi with national acts such as Cassper Nyovest, Nasty C and Ricky Rick.

He said that his aim is to establish himself in Joburg where there are more opportunities than the mother city.

“I want to focus more on my music production and become a national brand and pay more attention on my vocal skills as well,” he said.
