Motorists had to find alternative ways in Gugulethu when a section of NY3A was closed on Sunday 2 June to make way for the five-a-side Tavern Football Association Challenge Cup.

The tournament featured 10 teams representing local taverns including Wattase, Xola, Sabu, Popza, Cash, Oyi& Lifa, Webhasi, Webha&Linda’s, Zar Qhundu and East Yethu.

Event organiser Banana Sodinga described the tournament as a first of its kind in that area. He said their aim is to unite all the taverns and fight against crime. “It is five-a-side teams. We want to change the bad perception that people have about taverns that it is a place for carousers,” said Sodinga. He dismissed a perception that all the people who go to the taverns are drunkards.

Sodinga said they are targeting unemployed youth in a quest to keep them off the streets. “We are intending to start our league games early July where we will play every Sunday,” he said.

Webha&Linda’s tavern owner Lindani Notata at NY 28 who is a champion described the tournament as spectacular.

He urged other tavern owners to join the association. “The tournament will change the stereotype and the mindset of our spouses for thinking that when people go to taverns they are going for alcohol. They must know that there are other sport activities that are there,” said Notata.

Webha&Linda’s tavern walked away with R1 000 cash, a trophy and medals. In second place was Wattase (R700) and third Popza (R500).
