The Foschini Group staff members closed the year with a bang by making pleasant donations to more than 300 learners at Sonwabo and Vuyani Primary Schools combined.

The team, from the local Markhams store in Gugulethu Mall donated stationery to the two schools.

According to store manager Bongani Mnube this is part of the groups CSI initiatives which has also donated to other schools in the past years.

“This is our way of thanking the community and a way of giving back. This is in line with our goals to do our bit to assist local communities which includes the schools.

“Recently, we have made donations to schools in Elsiesriver and Khayelitsha, among others,” said Mnube.

The team started at Sonwabo Primary and then moved on to Vuyani. “We want them to start the New Year with stationery so that they can be motivated.

We understand that for some parents buying stationery is difficult as they are not working. As a community we need to put education first,” he said.

Mnube said they would love to donate to all the schools in the area but they will take it one step at a time.

Vuyani Primary’s Vice Principal Nozuko Alam said that this was a perfect pick up for the learners, despite schools closing.

“We are very happy because we know how much such acts boost morale among learners; it also enlightens the burden on parents as they won’t need to buy most of the stationery next year.

The children only get exercise books and pens so some parents really struggle ...”
