Young gospel artist Thobani Ngam is said to be taking the industry by storm since releasing an album titled: Sula Ezonyembezi in March this year.

“The 12 track album is popular because of the title song, getting airplay on most radio stations,” he said.

Thobani,31, from Brown’s Farm in Philippi said he started singing in 2000 whilst at home in Willowvale, in the Eastern Cape.

“I started singing at a young age, with a group called Siyakhula Gospel Group in Willowvalle. It did not last long, though.

Even as we pushed hard, we failed,” he said.

He relocated to Cape Town in 2008 after finishing matric, searching for greener pastures.

“In 2009 I joined a group called Pamela Gospel Group in Kraaifontein as a back-up vocalist. Then in 2011 I went solo, releasing my first album, titled Nkulunkulu, which did not do well with gospel lovers.

In 2014, I released a second album called Kunzima Emhlabeni. t’nThat is when people started to recognized my music, even though I struggled to market it, what with the music pirates adding to my woes, selling the album on the street market,” he said.

Thobani has described his latest offering as a worship album.

“My music is inspiring and giving hope to those who are losing it ... Telling people they mustn’t lose hope. We know God will never take something away from you without the intention of replacing it with something much better,” he said.
