Police were hailed for their swift action following the arrest of three suspects who allegedly robbed a gas factory in Plumstead on Saturday morning.

Police spokesman Captain FC van Wyk said the suspects, who were arrested for armed robbery were being tailed by the flying squad unit.

“Members deployed in Khayelitsha were alerted about the description of a motor car which was approaching Khayelitsha after the armed robbery took place in Plumstead,” he said.

He said the police managed to spot the car in Lingelethu West where an attempt to pull it over was met with fire from the suspects. The police shot back wounding one suspect. The other suspects were arrested on the spot.

“The police on duty recovered three unlicensed firearms namely: a Gecado Revolver (22 calibre) with six live rounds, a Luger Pistol with 1 magazine and 7x9mm rounds, a Norinco Star Pistol with a magazine and 3 x9mm live rounds,” he said.

The vehicle which was used by the suspects is believed to have been hi-jacked in Mfuleni. Captain Van Wyk cash of money estimated to the value of R200 000 was recovered from a bag in the suspects’ possesion.

The suspects will appear in the Khayelitsha Magistrates Court on Friday.

Community leader Chief Gwebindlala Nojaholo praised the police for their swift reaction.

“We need more of this because thugs are using our area as a haven for criminals. First they dumped murdered British tourist Anne De Wani in the same street and now these fellows are caught here,” he said.
