The mother of a “raped” Enkanini toddler is determined to see justice served despite a lack of support from the people in her community.

The mother of two says she did not get any support, especially from women, although she had evidence that her three-year-old daughter had been “raped”.

It is alleged the child was raped on Friday 6 September when she went to play with the man’s child.

The mother, whose identity cannot be made public to protect the child, says she was stunned when her daughter told her that “her private part was painful.” She says she realised that the child had been penetrated. When she took the child to crèche, the staff confirmed her discovery, she said.

The mother said her child told her that her friend’s father put her on top of him, took out his private part and penetrated her.

She says this was also confirmed by her daughter’s friend who said that the father also put her on top of him but did not take out his private parts.

She said they went to the doctor and it was again confirmed that the child had been “raped”.

The following day she went to the police. However, she was sent from pillar to post before the police finally decided to open a case.

The Sunday Times reported that she went to open the case at Harare, but was instructed by the officers there to go to Khayelitsha police station. But police at Khayelitsha told her the matter belonged to Harare.

However, the police allegedly refused to help her until her daughter vented on social media, prompting a public outcry.

In an interview with City Vision on Friday 20 September, at the Khayelitsha magistrate’s court where she had a “consultation” with the social worker, the mother refused to be drawn into the circumstances surrounding her experience with the police.

However, she said she received support from them since the case was opened and was happy with their work.

She is not happy with the attitude of people in her community though. “The people I thought I could trust said I was jealous of this man’s marriage hence I said he raped my child,” she said.

She said she suffered a lot of abuse as well after the allegations against the man and that she had to move out of her house and go stay with relatives.

She vowed to fight until justice was served.
