Ikhwezilesizwe Primary School grandparents received a pleasant surprise on Tuesday last week when staff and learners teamed up to host and entertain them.

The elders, most of whom spend their time at home and at seniors’ clubs during the day, were treated to some music and drama by their grand offspring.

They also received lifestyle tips from the provincial department of health.

Norma Mayeye, school principal, said the initiative dates back to 2015, in an effort to deal with some learner challenges.

She said most learners relied on their grandparents for support, because their biological parents were absent in their lives.

“Grannies raise their grandchildren and face abuse from their own kids,” she said.

Mayeye said there was a need to acknowledge the role played by grandparents to make a difference in their lives.

Ebba Jarha,70, said they were grateful to the school for hosting such a event.

“We are the ones that come to the school whenever there are problems with our grandchildren, so we are happy for once to come and enjoy ourselves,” she said.

Mavis Nthele,78, said the event has helped lower their stress levels. She said besides their own well-being, they stressed about a lot of things. He said it was nice to be entertained by their grandchildren. Buyiswa Khelembe, from the SGB, said they wanted the seniors to forget about all their worries.
