LETTER: Township based role models to look up to

2016-06-30 06:00

Let us not turn a blind eye on the youth who are moving this country forward. Let’s encourage them to create means and ways of unlocking the potential of the youth of our country.

Whenever people refer to the youth, they speak in terms of lazy and stupid, but that is not the true reflection of our youth. This is just generalizing.

I have seen a fellow named Zisile start his own printing business at only 26 years of age, and three years later, has hired two permanent workers.

I know Shaba from Khayelitsha near the Khayelitsha mall who converted his home into a motor spares shop, and is popular to all the taxi owners for the good quality taxi spares he sells to them at a good price.

I have also seen Ayabulela who does not have matric, who does not rob people or smuggle drugs, but instead has his own business in the rough township of Nyanga.

In Kuyasa there is Zuko Mndayi and Thembakazi who decided to take their relationship further by doing a joint venture, selling burgers from their business called Zuthemba Burger.

It is time we change the perception of our young people. If they have the guts to walk during the night in the dark, let’s help them to use those guts for positive output, starting businesses.

We must teach them that they are only limited by their thoughts. I challenge all to assist the youth with knowledge and limitless opportunities.

To the youth: don’t stop, continue to strive for the better and don’t be afraid to ask. Many people are willing to give. Don’t focus on the now but the future. If you are interested in discussing these issues further, contact me: t_qolo@yahoo.com or call me: 0783136117
