A Khayelitsha photographer uses his self taught skill to capture special memories.Remi Mautjana, 26, from Ilitha Park is the founder of SoulPix Photography where he captures corporate events, local and corporate events. He believes that special occasions need to be captured to be cherished forever, a belief he hopes his prospective clients share with him. “When my journey into photography started, I didn’t even realise it myself. I come from a home where we celebrate a lot ... Every weekend there is something worth capturing, so we will always have photographs of the activities. My interest was sparked from a very young age and after matric I got a good opportunity by happenstance,” he said. In 2012 a year after finishing matric, Mautjana enrolled for a graphic design course at the Learn to Earn Centre in Khayelitsha. “While I was doing that course, my lecturer told me about the Big Fish Digital School of Film. That’s where I Studied photography. After that I started working on various projects, including local lensman Teddy Sambu,” he said.Mautjana said he prefers to capture special sentimental occasions such as weddings and engagement shoots. “During these special moments, you must get it right, to get good photos so that you can keep the special moments forever,” he explained. He said having both taught himself and then later going to a formal institution, he sees value in both options. “At school, they teach you the basics and the technical side, but when you learn all by yourself, you explore a lot. It is by trial and error, but you get to do more and find different uses for one function,” he said. He said that even though this is just the beginning for him, as he hopes to establish himself as the best lensman around. He said one highlight was shooting a documentary for the University of Western Cape as well as for corporate companies.Find Mautjana on Facebook through his fan page Soulpix.
