Real Ideas F.C and the football fraternity is mourning the passing of one of its revered founder members and goalkeepers.

Linda “Ella” Mahote was his name and he played for “Dlala Mdiyezo” as the team was known.

“Ella” succumbed to death after a short illness while attending the funeral of a relative in the Eastern Cape. He was rushed to hospital, but gave up the ghost last week on Monday.

Dabane (his clan name) was a dedicated, disciplined, charismatic and approachable sportsman. His love for sport in general began at Intshinga Primary School as a high jump athlete, who proceeded to I.D Mkhize Secondary School with the likes of Sidelo Ngcawana. He also played fullback in rugby.

When Real Ideas was established, he was top of the mind with selectors, based on his prowess with handling the pigskin.

As a dedicated sportsman he accepted the responsibility with both hands in glove, as he excelled as a goalkeeper. Dabane also represented Gugulethu Football Association, playing under the auspices of SACOS, in the era of non-racial sport, during which the principle of no normal sport in an abnormal society was the guiding light.

Even in Khayelitsha where he resided, he was regarded as a humble man who could be found around the pool table, playing with friends.

Dabane will be laid to rest in Maitland cemetry on Sunday. The service will be conducted at Seventh Day Adventist Church in Khayelitsha.

Phumla Ngoxolo Mkhwemte, Dabane Sohlala Sikukhumbula.
