One of the most talented and gifted persons of our times, Dr Cikizwa Matole was laid to rest last Saturday.

“Tiny”, as she was affectionately known by those closest to her, was also an artist, writer and fashion designer under her own label.

She was also an accounting guru, with sound book-keeping skills.

Wherever she was, she was followed by laughter, which came in handy in her line of work as an optometrist.

I have been following the history of some highly gifted people and discovered that they have been, in one way or the other, been tormented by a litany of trials.

Amongst their flaws is temperament, drug use; alcohol over consumption and suicidal tendencies.

In his book, Gifted, Hunted and Haunted, Hosea P Ramphekwa writes: “Gifted people are under siege. There are diverse enemies pursuing them with the aim to take the wind out of their sails.”

QAs society, we get shocked and we are often discouraged and reduced to tears when we see people we love, and look up to, engaging in acts or conduct unbecoming.

So, in honing her skills as a “vision-corrector” for more than 20 years, Dr Matole was showcasing and displaying her God-given gifts. There’s just too much mess that accompanies highly talented individuals.

Brenda Fassie, who held the rare gift of voice. Now its our dear Dr Tiny Matole. Their only crime is “The Gift”.

As I have mentioned earlier, Tiny was a comedian of note, and we marvelled at her epic sense of humor.

In Aug 2017 she posted: “Mos ikhona la way ukhaphe umntu eya emngcwabeni womntu, ube wena ungamazi nowmazi lomntu, hay shame yinto ye darkie leyo. Sasisebancinci indim no Dr Pinki Malefane sikhapha uBhut’ Ntinti uya eGugs. Sakhwela itrain shame safika eSection 3. Now sisemngcwabeni, ndacinga mna ndathi Ha-a nge Obituary, sendilapha so ndifuna ukuva ngalomntu from inkonzo yezithethi. Hayke wabizwa umntu ozothetha ngomfi. Watyhala ke wathi ‘Lo mntu ulele apha ebebulisa, hay ebengonqeni ubulisa, ndithi kuwe noba ujonge ecaleni uzakulinda ude umjonge atsho “Molo tata!”, soze amphose uMolo. Kuyanetha uzova ngaye selesithi “MOLO!” Uyakwazi nokukuphinda akadinwa. Kangangokuba ibuhlungu intliziyo yam uba ndizobuliswa ngubani ngoba le dyongwana yangoku ayibulisi, kwekhu kubi! Hayke ndimile!’ Mna ndaqonda uba asoze ndithule, ndadanduluka ubuza ‘Qha? Thethinto ba yilonto qha ebeyenza?’ Wabuza umntu ‘Ubufuna enye ntombi?’ Ndathi mna, thethuba akhange abenguye noba ngu Driver we bus? Okanye icoach ye soccer or umthungi wempahla or acule ke phofu?’ Ndathi hayi lo mntu usiqhathile.’

“Kulapho nda decide ukufunda so that laa mini kungathiwa “uTiny ebebulisa fullstop!” Kuba ndiyibona mna izintloni le abantu bangenzi I effort. Uthini wena? Mna I corrected ivision zabantu for 20 years. Itsho into!” - so goes the FB post!

I’m writing this tribute with tears in my eyes, only it is tears of joy – for as much as her destiny was derailed, it was however achieved! Tiny lived her life to the fullest. The number of loyal patients she had can attests to this. She had her own flaws – like all of us, however, they did not begin to outnumber her virtues. Tiny had an outstanding intellect, a great sense of humor, an impeccable honesty, and love for people and her craft.

With all her virtues combined – she did not fit in this world full of vices and mean people. “This world never loved me”, she once said.
