Unrest halts games for now

2019-04-11 06:00

A game between two primary schools in Nomzamo had to be postponed yesterday (Wednesday) due to ongoing land-related unrest engulfing the area.

ACJ Phakade and Nomzamo primary school’s were set to lock horns at the ACJ Phakade grounds, but the two schools agreed to postpone the games for learners’ safety.

Nomzamo resembled a war zone on Wednesday, as Red Ants Security Relocation and Eviction Service and law enforcement authorities demolished structures on an open field along the N2 owned by the Asla, and residents were dispersed by police firing rubber bullets and tear gas.

Masixole Mbanjwa, a teacher at ACJ Phakade, said they were concerned for learners’ safety, adding that the games would be postponed until the safety of learners can be ensured.

The under-10, under-12 and under-13 boys’ teams along with the girls’ teams were to test their skills against one another. “We don’t want to play, because the learners may be safe at the grounds, but in danger when they are on their way home,” Mbanjwa said.

“Our learners were to do battle in their second league encounters this season, but unfortunately we have to wait for the situation to settle down.”

Thando Mbulali, a teacher at Nomzamo Primary, also confirmed his troops were ready for Wednesday’s games, but unforeseen circumstances had forced them to abandon the clashes. “Our school is very close to the action, so we were forced to send the learners home early. The violence that erupted is a major concern.”

Mbanjwa said it is expected that teams from Silukhanyo Primary would lock horns with Christmas Tinto Primary’s sides if the situation allows.

The game between ACJ and Nomzamo Primary has been postponed to Friday 12 April, depending on the situation in the community on the day.
