The opening of a newly upgraded facility for children at Michael Mapongwana Community Day Centre in Khayelitsha on Monday was warmly welcomed by the community.

Dr Nomafrench Mbombo, the MEC for Health, opened the CDC Maternal Child Health Unit which is designed to improve services at the centre.

The unit was built after the public, staff and management raised dissatisfaction with the condition of the facility, which the claimed resembled a shack.

Mbombo said she took a decision to build the unit soon after she learnt about the conditions the public was subjected to when they visited the centre.

“It was indeed a shack. The conditions were not good for anyone. I said it should not take over a year to change to build a new facility for the centre. There are more rooms for consultation as opposed to the previous one. About 2500 mothers visit the unit per month. We are worried that there are still many who do not visit clinics. That really worries us,” Mbombo said.

Mbombo said there is going to be a fully equipped play site for children which they will use when visiting the centre.

The upgrade of the unit was in the tune of about R7 million.

She also said she is going to unpack her plans which will benefit her department when she delivers her budget speech later in the month.

Asavela Bunu, a mother, applauded the upgraded unit.

“There was no privacy in the old unit. It was overcrowded and we had to stand outside regardless of the weather conditions. That made our children sick. There is a huge deference now since we have moved-into this one,” Bunu said.

Mzangwa Ndibongo, chairperson of the Khayelitsha Health Forum, said they are happy for the new facility.

“We are very happy. The space was so small and cleanliness was a concern. Now there is a big difference. We have been complaining about the old facility and we are happy that the department came to part to change that,” Ndibongo said.
