Vandals mess up new units

KTC residents in Nyanga are concerned about the increasing crime and ongoing vandalism of newly built houses in Section 4. They are calling on the City of Cape Town to speedily move people into the new houses to avoid further vandalism.

Community leader Mathews Lacky said the unoccupied houses are targeted by the criminals and used for a range of evil jobs. “The criminals are breaking the windows and stealing brass fittings and the copper pipes. The City has fixed many houses but the criminals are continuing to steal and damage the houses,” said Lacky. He described the vandalism as a waste of tax payers money.

He urged the City to allow people to immediately move after the houses had been completed.

“Last week Wednesday, we found one of the houses with blood stains on the floor. It is clear that someone was stabbed and ran into the house for safety,” he said.

Ward 39 councillor Khaya Yozi said he is aware of the crime and vandalism of the houses. “Usually when there is a housing development the City normally fences the site before the construction takes place. Here in KTC it never happened that and when I enquired the City about that they said there is no budget for that,” said Yozi.

Yozi reiterated Lacky’s comment that people were robbed at night when they walk past the houses. He also called for people to be allowed to move in as soon as the buildings are complete. “But the challenge is some of the houses are not installed the electricity and have no running water yet,” said Yozi.
