LETTER: Voter apathy is a concern

2016-05-12 06:00

Election fever has enveloped South Africa, accompanied by slander and innuendo.

It is indeed a Shakespearian tragedy that millions of our citizens have not registered to vote, while millions do not even bother to vote.

Our voter participation remains among the worst in Africa. Many citizens choose not to vote simply because they don’t care about the outcome. Should you choose not to vote during the crucial upcoming election, you will have no right to complain. In fact, you are part of the problem and not part of the solution. And then you will get the government you deserve. Voting is a choice, silence is approval, leaving it to others to decide the critical issues at stake. By ignoring a democratic election, we dishonour those who sacrificed their lives to protect our rights and our democratic freedom.
