Hope for a better future topped the agenda as millions of South Africans, predominantly in the townships, braved yesterday’s rainy and cold weather to cast their ballots.

As early as 06:30, people started queuing at various polling stations in the townships and by the time most stations opened their doors at 07:00, voters were ready to vote.

When City Vision arrived at one of the voting stations in Endlovini, Khayelitsha shortly before it opened, scores of people were already lining up. Three kilometres away, at a tent set up as a voting station, more people were standing along Mew Way ready to vote in the country’s sixth democratic general election.

Voting stations were expected to remain open until 21:00 and the rain did little to dampen the spirits of the eager voters. In some areas including Langa and Crossroads, anxious voters filled halls and other buildings earmarked as voting stations.

At Lizo Nombembe Hall in Gugulethu voters shared umbrellas as the rain intensified.

Lakhe Kaleni, from Endlovini said she left her home shortly after 06:30 to vote before going to work. “It is very important that I make my mark,” she said. “This is for my children.”
