“We are in a warzone”

“It boarders close to a warzone while there is peace and there is no war in South Africa,” he told parliament. “If we can’t deal and control the murder cases, we are not bringing any joy to South Africans.”

Reacting to the figures, Community Safety MEC Dan Plato said Western Cape had the lowest police ration per capita.

He said the national average was “one officer for every 369” people.

“In the Western Cape there is one officer for every 509 residents, while in the City of Cape Town, only one officer for every 560 residents,” Plato said.

He added that violent crimes took place largely in places with less officers, with one officer for every 628 people in Nyanga alone.


In Nyanga attempted murder cases went from 183 to 172, sexual offences 356 to 308, rape from 256 to 210 and car hijackings from 257 to 276.

Philippi East:

While the station recorded the highest increase in murder cases, it also recorded 20 more attempted murder cases from 98 to 118, an additional 22 sexual offence cases from 141 to 163 and 123 rape cases from 111.

Car hijackings dropped from 136 to 107.


Cases of attempted murder went up from 76 to 90.

Sexual offences from 238 to 223, rape from 173 to 166 and car hijackings from 157 to 101.


Langa recorded 14 more attempted murder cases from 37 to 51, sexual offences increased from 53 to 66, rape from 38 to 51 and car hijackings declined from 29 to 18.
