A teenage boy appeared in the Strand Magistrate’s Court for attempted murder last Wednesday (25 October).

The 17-year-old was arrested following a shooting incident in Magatya Street, Lwandle on Monday 23 October.

According to Sergeant Mthokozisi Gama, Lwandle police spokesperson, the incident occurred at 15:40.

Gama says it is alleged the teenager shot at a fellow pupil (17) following a physical altercation during a change of class about 11:00 at a local school.

After school, the allegedly teenager went home to fetch his father’s firearm.

As the classmate was walking home with friends he was approached by the teenager, who opened fire at him.

“The suspect fired a shot at the complainant, but missed. The complainant who ran away, reported the incident to police the following day (Tuesday 24 October),” said Gama.

The teenager was arrested at school on Tuesday at 08:45.

The firearm, which was wrapped in a T-shirt and hidden inside a headboard, was confiscated at the teenager’s home in Asanda Village.

The teenager was released into the custody of his parents on R1 000 bail.

He is expected to make his next court appearance on Tuesday 12 December.

In light of the incident, Lwandle police urge community members owning a firearm to:

V handle their firearms with great caution and responsibility;

V keep the firearm in a locked safe and ensure the key is in their possession at all times;

V not to leave the firearm under the car seat or under any of their pillows or bed;

V never ask anyone to keep their gun while they are occupied; and

V not allow children to play with their gun, or even to handle the firearm.

Also note that it is an offence:

V to use a firearm unlawfully;

V to lose a gun negligently;

V to point a gun at someone;

V to lend or rent out your legal firearm; and

V to not report a stolen or lost firearm to the police immediately.
