LETTER: We need to listen to those suicidal voices

2016-03-31 06:00

Today’s fast-paced lifestyle has made us a greedy and self-serving society.

We are too busy chasing material possessions to see when our loved ones are depressed.

Suicide is one of the scary realities of modern life. When someone feels helpless and unloved, they start thinking about death. Many people have considered tying a noose around their neck and ending it all. They think no one cares about their pain.

This is not the case. Suicidal people often reach out for help but they are ignored by those around them.

We take them seriously only when they are dead. We need to be alert and realise when someone needs assistance.

Helping someone does not mean you have to give them money. Offering a shoulder to cry on or listening to someone’s problems is the first step to recovery.

Talking is therapy for the soul.

However, true healing also empowers. As the old saying goes, when you give a man a fish, you feed him for a day. When you teach him how to fish, you feed him for a lifetime.

Let’s stop ignoring those who are crying out for help. If we continue doing so we run the risk of weakening our communities and we will have no one to support us during our time of need. Everyone feels pain and no one is immune to suicidal thoughts.

I urge everyone to listen to what their relatives, friends, colleagues and neighbours have to say. Listening to someone’s troubles just might save a life.
