What is our take on the notion of democracy. What does democracy entail in terms of the freedom self expression and its limitations.I have been grappling with these notions for a while now, what with the limited knowledge one possesses as far as these go. As you know I normally shy away from politics because they can become nasty at times. It is my take that not all of us have the intellect or capacity to engage in a scholarlily manner in these things, and one prefers to preserve their energy as far as politics go, especially in the public arena.I am trying to paint a picture or an image as far as these freedoms are concerned. Are we there yet? Sometimes we are in such an entrapment that even the wrongs we see must remain with us, for once we say anything about them, we might regret the outcome. This reminds me of a classic movie titled “See No Evil Hear No Evil”.However, it is the masses on the ground that suffer in instances like these. When we ushered in the new dispensation we were looking for a change in our lifestyles. We thought the fighting, screaming, toyi- toying, the burning of things and the stoning cars was a thing of the past.People thought that everything would just workout perfectly when the new Mzantsi was ushered. But the present is the direct opposite of that.Should the state have educated the masses beforehand about the aspects of democracy and what it entailed. These days one cannot even say or speak their voices without criticism. We are always monitored as to how we tow the line, but some of the things affect us big time. Where is our voice? Those who try to stand up for this are being persecuted to the extent that they are sidelined. It is evident then that our rights are limited and if you go against the grain, you are labelled or face the highest condemnation. You then ask yourself is this the price we pay for democracy?
