Local DJ Olwethu Trom, better known as DJ Ozzil-Waves, continues to make waves in the local entertainment industry.

The 2016 Viceroy Makoya champion is the new resident DJ at South Africa’s third biggest radio station, Umhlobo Wenene, for its weekend show Iqonga Labatsha, which is hosted by legendary radio personality Sizwe Saliso.

Trom says he didn’t expect to be invited to join the station and was surprised to be told by its personnel that they would like him on board.

And this, he said, was just after playing his mix at the station last week.

“I went to the studio to play my mix, and during the live interview Saliso shared the news with me,” Trom, who is also resident DJ and events planner at the well-known Umtata Lounge in Lwandle, recalls.

“I could not believe it and thought he was joking, until he repeated it off-air.”

Trom says as much as he is happy about the appointment, much still needs to be done to impress the show’s 1,5 million listeners.

“There is a lot of work to be done to grow the show by gaining new listeners,” he reckons.

Saliso has been working with the local disc jockey for some time.

“I have been working with Ozzil through Umtata Lounge,” he says. “He doesn’t only possess very good DJ skills, but he is also a committed professional and a down-to-earth, patient young person.

“As a firm believer in entrepreneurship and how much brand management requires entrepreneurial skills in music, radio and arts in general, I found him to be a perfect individual to earn residency on the show, to give it a boost and recognise his talent and skills set.”

Saliso said Trom will not only represent the province from which a large number of the radio’s audience comes from, but he will also share his skills and impeccable song selection. “I also hope this will open doors for him, while adding a fresh approach to Iqonga Labatsha’s million-plus listeners”.

Says Trom: “After winning the Makoya, people asked me about my next move, and this is one of them. I am also working on a single with DJ Christos, which will be released later this year.”
