A family of five has been left homeless after the roof of their house was damaged in the stormy weather on Tuesday.

The roof of the house in KTC was lying on top of another house and had damaged windows of the house.

The bricks from the house also flew away, damaging two other houses, a car and a neighbour’s fence.

House owner Mzukisi Dyantyisi (52) said he was inside his house with his son when the roof was blown away but luckily no one got injured.

“I was going to the kitchen to make tea when I heard thunder. The next thing the roof went up and flew to the neighbours house,” said Dyantyisi.

He said they were lucky because the bricks that fell inside did not hurt them or damage their furniture.

His neighbours came to his rescue when they provided him with space in their homes to at least store his furniture before it got damaged by the rain. “I do not know where my family is going to sleep tonight. We do not have a place to go to,” he said.

The unemployed father said he does not even have money to fix his house and hopes that he can get help to fix it.

A neighbour that was affected, Thembeka Bomvana (75) said her windows and fence were damaged.

However, she did not know the extent of the damage since the roof was still on top of her house..

“I’m a pensioner I do not know where I will get the money to fix everything that was damaged,” she said.

Ward 39 councillor Khaya Yozi said he was unable to help due to municipal policies that prohibited councillors from getting involved when the house owner has a title deed. He said he notified the City’s disaster risk management to conduct an assessment and to see what could be done.

Yozi said informal structures and formal structures are treated differently in such cases and that even his ward allocation budget does not allow him to repair houses.
