The streets of New Crossroads, Nyanga East and Gugulethu have become no go zones for commercial vehicles following youths protests in the aftermath of the fatal shooting of a New Crossroads woman on Sunday.

Phumza Pita was shot and killed on Saturday after an altercation with an officer during a police raid on an illegal shebeen in Koornhof Street. According to eye witnesses Pita was shot at after she asked the police why they were kicking down loud speakers and braai stands during the raid.

However, the police dispute these claims, saying their members reacted after the crowd became unruly and attacked them.

“According to a report we received from the SAPS it is alleged that on Saturday at about 23:30, police officials were busy closing down an illegal shebeen in Gugulethu.

The people in the shebeen allegedly became riotous and the police called for back-up.” said the Independent Police Investigative Directorate spokesperson Moses Dlamini.

IPID investigates police complaints and SAPS are not allowed to comment in cases once they are forwarded to the directorate.

As more police members arrived on the scene, more community members became involved in the altercation, Dlamini said.

“Community members allegedly attacked the police by throwing stones and damaged police vehicles.

It is further alleged that one of the police officers was surrounded by about ten people who tried to rob him of his firearm. The police officer fired three warning shots.

It was later reported to the police that the deceased was taken by a private vehicle to KTC day hospital where she died. The uncle of the deceased was also shot in the right arm,” said Dlamini. He added that they were still investigation and that statements from witnesses were still outstanding.

“A case of murder and attempted murder has been opened. No arrest has been made. Investigations continue,” he said.
