Lulibo Project and Woman Zone brought a cross-section of women to an imbizo to discuss everyday challenges and means to make their lives worth living.

They converged at the Shawco offices in Nyanga, and, for two hours, discussed issues and shared their unique stories.

‘My scars don’t define me’, was the theme of the debate.

Lulibo Projects focusses on women development and Woman Zone is an organisation that tries to connect women all over Cape Town.

Nancy Richards, one of the founders of Woman Zone said that women no longer talked to each other to shared their pains and successes.

“Gatherings like these give women the opportunity to unite and empower each other through sharing”, said Richards.

Nolundi Ndesi, a member of Lulibo Projects and a community leader in Nyanga said that young women experienced so much pain in their lives and forgot to celebrate their successes.

She also said that women are no longer united to face challenges as a group.

Different backgrounds and race was at the core of this disunity, she shared.

Ayamangalisa Badli from Nyanga agreed with Ndesi that woemn are quick to pass judgement, instead of finding ways to help one another.

The talks further focused on what keeps individuals strong and what made them happy as a woman.

Thandeka Matinyana said that young women are so scarred that their pains define them and the only thing they can do is to protect their children so that they will not become victims like their mother.

Dephne Cooper from Woman Zone shared stories of her upbringing and the difficulties she faced growing up.

Ntsiki Sigege, the author of a book called A Broken Wing-Divorce said that women go through tough times, but should strive to start living beyond the pain.

“As woman we need to find ways to celebrate ourselves and look for tools that will make us unleash the power within us,” she said.
