Netherlands-born student and Social Designer, Lotte de Haan, has been hosting braiding experiment workshops, at Gugasthebe in Langa for the past two weekends.

At the workshops, kids are encouraged to experiment creativity with different materials in order to produce certain outcomes.

This workshop not only gives these kids an opportunity to engage with others through art, (because honestly not many of our children are exposed to these resources at school), but also aims to take them off the streets. And we all know too well how important this is, especially in a township plagued with the social demons of drug abuse, alcoholism, gangsterism and violence. Workshops like these are critical in giving these children ‘an escape’.

These are all waste materials like leather and plastic that most factory outlets would have thrown away in any case. Therefore, the workshop itself also has environmental benefits, as the children are able to turn these materials into valuable creations and designs.

Lotte will be hosting another workshop this Saturday 29 July 2017 at 2pm.
