A group of fashion conscious youngster in Nyanga are hoping to use popular culture to boost self esteem in their peers.

Yasho Lento, as they would like to be called will be hosting the Fashion March at the Zolani Centre.

The event will take place on Saturday 9 April from 12:00 to 20:00. According to the movement’s Sinalo Jonas, the day’s festivities go beyond just fashion.

“The aim of this event is to create awareness in our communities to make each and every individual to feel comfortable in their own style and skin.

This is also a platform to create opportunities for upcoming designers, models, stylists and performing artist who have limited access to information and opportunities. This is more of promoting ekasi individuals who are inspired and fashion forward,” said Jonas.

The event is set to begin with a march around the townships with participants flaunting their fashion and style.

“We just want the people to see that being fashion minded is normal and they need to get used to it.

“We also want the participants who are usually shy about their style and fashion sense. Over and above that there will be exhibitions by poets, rappers and performing artist on the day.

We want to create a platform where the young people who aspired get to socialize together and create relationships going forward,” said Jonas. It’s a free entry event and the organisers hope it’s the start of a new trend for youths in Nyanga.

“It’s a first of its kind event for us but there definitely will be more. We invited everyone to come and see the talents that we have in our townships,” said Jonas.
