A passion for reading keeps her awake at night as she plots ways of spreading the love across Visionland.

Ziyanda Baba, 23, works as a part-time model but she has made it her mission to help teach young children to read , write and spell.

“Me and a group of friends started Young Minds - an organisation that aims to assist township children to have the ability to read well, to write and spell correctly,” Ziyanda said.

This has been Ziyanda’s dream since 2009 but was only realised this year after she quit her direct marketing job.

“I have been going around in circles to make sure that I am assisted and motivated to actually start this concept,” she said.

Her idea received the thumbs up from various people in the city and are willing to help her.

This Cape Town High School alumni said she was bothered to “see children doing dismally in the annual national assesment” carried out by the Department of Education.

Ziyanda said hers will be a reading club with a difference.

“Writing, spelling, and reading complement each other.

Spelling helps a child see the patterns in language and understand how words are really put together.

By learning spelling, children realize that the English language follows rules, which makes it easier for them to understand those rules when reading or writing,” she added.

Young Minds is staffed by Lady Slice, Zolani Heleni, Yonela Sifuba, Paso Mtati, Mimi Nomtshongwana, Theodora Bodla and Ziyanda and on Saturday, 04 March, will unveil the organisation at a launch function to be held at JL Zwane Church’s Livingstone Hall from2pm. “We are calling all parents of fourth graders and people interested in education to attend this event,” she said.

You can call Young Minds on 0722153951.
