Perseverance and dedication to the craft of writing will surely reward an aspiring author with platitudes.

Philasande Phinzi,26, from Site B in Khayelitsha, has already published two poetry books titled ‘Usekhona na Umdlanga?’ and ‘Sheltered Thoughts’.

Both books were published by Lesedi House last year.

“My poems are about life in general. They are about love, religion and nature. They are about what is happening in our societies,” Philasande said.

Explaining why he published two different books in Xhosa and English, Philasande said “it just happened because I was driven by the mood.”

“It depends on the mood or what inspiring me on the time. Sometimes it happens where something just comes up in my mind and the words just flow. And there are times where words just come up in English and struggle to translate them into Xhosa,” said Phinzi.

He said the first book contained about 71 poems, while the latter had about 65 poems.

He said writing in the vernacular was his way of promoting and preserving the IsiXhosa language.

“I also want to encourage young people and the black community at large to read. Let’s kill the perception that black people can’t read,” he said.

He said he started writing while he was in high school.

“I was good on writing essays at school. My educators used to praise me, but I didn’t pay much attention(to writing).

I became only serious in 2010 whilst doing Grade 11 at Usasazo High School in Site B,” he said.

Philasande said he started work on both books in 2014.

He markets his books through word of mouth and on social media.

The books cost R200 each.
