ANOTHER attack on a pensioner in two weeks has raised questions about the safety of the elderly in the community.

This comes after a 91-year-old man was attacked by two armed suspects on Friday night in Redcliffe, Verulam.

Head of Reaction Unit South Africa (Rusa) Prem Balram said that on Friday his control centre in Verulam received a call from a resident in Dawnview Drive, Redcliffe informing them of a murder in a nearby shack.

Balram said that officers arrived at the house of the complainant and was pointed in the direction of a shack where two children had seen a dead body.

“The reaction officer proceeded to the home and found a 91-year-old male in the home. He had been attacked by two young male suspects who produce a knife and robbed him of R500 in cash,” said Balram.

He added that the suspects then injured the elderly male with the knife and he passed out during the struggle.

“The children who saw the man lying on the ground assumed that he had been murdered and sought help from the resident who contacted Rusa.”

Balram said that the victim was not seriously injured and the area was searched for the suspect, but no arrests were made.

Police are investigating.

In a separate incident last week a 78-year-old lady was murdered by strangulation in Tongaat.

That matter is also being investigated by police
