A LOCAL school lost its vital administration block after a fire gutted the building in the early hours of Friday.

Buffelsdale Primary School was abuzz in the early hours of 15 May as neighbours and emergency services were on scene.

It is not known how the fire started, but police and the fire department officials on scene said the matter is currently being investigated.

One of the first people at the fire was adjacent neighbour Vasu Naicker who said the fire grew “at quite a rate”.

“At first we heard what sounded like gunshots.

“We were very cautious because we assumed there was a robbery of some kind taking place. But once we peered outside we noticed smoke coming from the school.”

Naicker said the fire then began to get larger and larger.

“There was very little any of us to do because it was mainly the roof that began burning. And when it did, there was no stopping it. It burned very hard and very fast for a long period of time.”

Another nearby resident, who did not want to be named, concurred that the fire was rapid.

“We heard strange sounds at first and saw a bit of smoke.

“At that hour you hear everything. By the time we went outside to investigate, flames were already visible. It just destroyed everything.”

School officials declined to comment saying they would wait for investigations to conclude
