THE winning streak for Verulam 2 came to an end as they suffered defeat to Harlequins 2 in the Challenge Reserve 40 over league at the Northcroft Grounds in Phoenix at the weekend.

After losing the toss Verulam 2 were put in to field and were able to restrict Harlequins 2 to 163 in 39 overs.

Playing on a dusty, rapidly deteriorating pitch both teams struggled to get any momentum going.

Stand in captain, Dhiren Balwanth said both sides had slow starts because of invariable bounce.

“It was a terrible wicket to play on with the ball keeping extremely low or bouncing surprisingly. The spinners were even getting ‘wided’ for bounce,” said Balwanth.

In reply to the 163 by Harlequins 2, Verulam 2 lost two of their top order batsmen in the 4th over when Shinga Appanna got out and Jared Page, who came in at 3, fell for a duck.

Linoshan Moodley was brought in and together with opener Balwanth, they stitched together a 50 run partnership.

Wickets continued to fall and the duo were dismissed for 28 and 36 respectively.

Small partnerships along the way almost took Verulam 2 across the line with Rowen Sheomungal and Mohamed Maiter going well, but in the end they fell 15 runs short as they were bowled out for 147.

“We are still very optimistic for the season and we are going to use what we learnt in this game to improve. The way we are losing wickets in the middle overs especially needs to change and players will need to step up,” said Balwanth. “The game was played in good spirit and one of the positives was our fight to win.”

Verulam 2 plays the Silver Saints in Chatsworth on Sunday.
