THERE was a phenomenal response to the basketball coaching clinic held at the KwaDukuza Country Club Ground sports complex on Thursday.

The basketball road-show clinic which kicked off in the Ilembe District will be heading towards Uthungulu, Umkhanyakude, Umzinyathi, Amajuba, Umgungundlovu, Uthukela, Sisonke and Ugu in the next two months.

The basketball clinic was arranged by KwaZulu-Natal Basketball in conjunction with national basketball outfit, Duzi Royals and the Euros Basketball League outfit, Zalgris.

International basketball coach Darius Dimavicus of Lithuania put the local coaches through their paces, teaching them the five fundamental skills, namely dribbling, passing, shooting, defending and reaction.

After an exhausting session with the coaches, Dimavicus gave them a “hands-on” approach to teaching pupils the game.

He put the pupils through their paces, stopping them in their tracks to outline faults and failures before suggesting new ideas of combating the opposition.

Secretary of KwaZulu-Natal basketball, Phumalni Lukhela said: “The teachers and pupils in the Ilembe District are indeed privileged to have been coached by an international coach in Diavicus on home-soil.

KwaDukuza basketball coaching co-ordinator Queen Ndlovu thanked the principal of ML Sultan and Tshelenkosi for allowing their pupils to attend Thursday’s coaching session.

She was indebted to the basketball coaches of Shakaskraal Primary School, Dinuphozo, Mbozamo Primary, Tshelebantu, Izihpozethu, Enkukwini, ML Sultan and Tshelenkosi for attending the basketball clinic.

Meanwhile, KwaDukuza Basketball will host the Top Schools basketball tournament for primary (under 13 boys and girls) and secondary (under 18 boys and girls) schools on Monday, 15 June at the KwaDukuza Country Club Ground Complex on Monday, 15 June commencing at 8.30am.
