A PREDOMINANTLY young Railways 2 played Phoenix 2 in the Challenge Reserves 40 over league at the Rainham Grounds at the weekend.

Phoenix 2 won the toss and elected to bat in a game reduced due to extreme heat.

Batting first, Phoenix 2 posted 192 in 25 overs although they lost regular wickets in their innings with their last batsmen falling in the final over.

The wickets were shared among several of Railway’s bowlers.

Chairman of Railways Cricket Club, Anthony Chellan said the conditions were challenging for the players as the wicket had invariable bounce.

“The pitch was very dry and uneven and made it very difficult to get into the game. Wickets fell from the first over and it got harder as the match progressed,” said Chellan.

Railways 2 struggled to challenge the total and were bowled out for 77 in the 20th over.

The heavy defeat hasn’t dampened spirits however as the team is made up of predominantly 16 year old players, playing their first season of senior cricket.

Nearly 80 percent of the Railways 2 side were playing U15 cricket last season, but the lack of an U17 league has meant the youngsters are facing senior players with vastly greater experience.

“They are not concerned about the score and we are taking this season as one for development and growth. Physically as they grow the results will improve,” said Chellan.

Chellan commended the players for their spirit, optimism and hard work.

“They can only develop and get better. There is promising talent among the team and they will grow from strength to strength,”said Chellan. “They have been successful at junior level and now playing against senior players, they will develop and get better as they play.”

A challenge for the team will be the exam period when many of the players will have to withdraw for exams.

Railways 2 will be playing Harlequins 2 at the Lt King Grounds in Durban on Sunday.
