Tongaat rapist sentenced

A TONGAAT rapist Nkosingiphile Goge was sentenced to 15 years imprisonment at Verulam Magistrate’s Court last week after he was accused of raping an eight-year-old school girl.

According to police the victim was on her way to school on 27 October 2014 when the suspect intercepted and forced her into a nearby bush where he raped her.

SAPS spokesman Major Thulani Zwane said, “The accused used his hand to close the victim’s mouth to prevent her from screaming while he raped her and promised to give the victim R10 every morning on her way to school.”

“After the incident the victim ran onto the road, crying and was approached by two females who noticed that she was not okay.

“One of the woman took the victim to her house where she explained what had happened to her. They immediately called Tongaat police and a case of rape was opened. When police were patrolling around the Magwaveni area, the victim identified the suspect as he was still wearing the same clothes.

“The Phoenix Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Violence Unit took over the investigation. The victim was competent enough and relayed all the required information for a successful conviction.”

The Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Mmamonnye Ngobeni applauded the sentence handed down to the accused.

“This conviction shows that police and communities should work together, as these community members did after noticing a child who had been violated,” she said.
