AN 18 year old robbery suspect was arrested in Ottawa after he robbed a 24-year-old pregnant woman and threatened her unborn child last week.

According to the woman’s boyfriend, she was on her way home from the clinic when the 18-year-old held her up at knife point.

“He told her to give him her phone and money or he will poke her in her stomach right now,” he said.

He said his girlfriend is due to deliver in the next few weeks.

Head of Reaction Unit South Africa, Prem Balram said that the victim and friend stopped a Reaction Officer near Waterloo on the Umdloti Beach Road and informed him that she was robbed at knife point.

“The heavily pregnant woman was in shock and managed to explain that the suspect produced a huge knife and held it to her stomach,” said Balram.

Balram said that when the Reaction Officer was provided with the details of the suspect, he called for back up and proceeded to chase the suspect on foot.

“He finally arrested him near Waterloo, approximately 2kms from the scene of the robbery,” said Balram.

According to Balram, the suspect was violent and drew a large black handled knife but was forced to the ground and handcuffed and the stolen items were recovered.

The 18-year-old was handed over to the Verulam SAPS.

Verulam SAPS communications officer, Warrant Officer Mark Prakasim said the suspect has been charged and will appear in court this week.

“We want to thank the Reaction Unit for their assistance in this incident and for generally helping combat crime in our community,” said Prakasim.
