VERULAM Athletic Club (VAC) embarked in a triple header this past weekend with the Day lee Challenge on Saturday, the Development Challenge league and the Chatsworth Ultra Marathon.

Sifiso Mbonambi led team VAC in scintillating form qualifying with a fluent 4.28 in the 52km race over the suburbs of Chatsworth. Siphiwe Khanyile, also looking for a Comrades qualifier duly obliged with a 4.34 finish ahead of Krish Naidoo, a comrades veteran who has already completed over 20 Comrades Marathons to date.

Unassuming Simon Blose announced his readiness for the “big one” with a steady 4.40 a minute later, whilst an elated Victor Nxumalo qualified with ease in a sub five hour 4.52. Harrison Mkhulise, after a long absence of over a year made an emphatic return in 5.05 ahead of running mate Jacob Zitha in 5.21.

Novice female runner Anita Sewnarain, set another milestone in her short career in VAC silks with her first attempt in a ultra marathon and duly obliged with a 6.15 finish, two minutes ahead of her spouse Pravin Sewnarain.

Veteran VAC female Comrades runner, Priscilla Naidoo with a green number to her credit having completed over 10 Comrades Marathons, eased through her training run in 6.17, whilst Sherwen Pillay finished in 6.31. Thulani Mthembu, another Comrades runner also opted for the shorter 25km as speed session in a sub two hour 1.59.
