House break-in suspect arrested: Verulam -

At approximately 9.15am on 20 February members of Reaction Unit South Africa (Rusa)were dispatched to Ivy Street in Southridge, Verulam after receiving reports of a house break-in in progress.

Upon arrival at the residence officers noticed a sliding door leading into the dining room ajar. As officers entered the home, the suspect attempted to run out of the house, but was apprehended and placed under arrest.

The suspect was in possession of copper pipes, curtains and a brand new security gate which was stolen from the home. The 34-year-old Waterloo resident admitted that the proceeds from the sale of the stolen goods were going to be used to purchase drugs.

The suspect was handed over to authorities and is currently being detained at the Verulam SAPS

Robbery suspect impersonates prison warden: Verulam -

A robbery suspect clad in a prison warden’s uniform was arrested by members of Reaction Unit South Africa and a second suspect was arrested by a member of Transnatal Flying Squad after they robbed a vegetable hawker of R40 in cash on 21 February.

At approximately 9.30am the Rusa Operations Center received a call for assistance when a young male was robbed and assaulted by two suspects.

One suspect, who was attired in a warden’s uniform, approached the victim and demanded cash. The second suspect then assisted his accomplice by searching the 19-year-old victim and removing his cash. They then assaulted him. A member of TNFS who was parked in the vicinity noticed the robbery in progress and managed to arrest one suspect. The second suspect fled on foot and was arrested by Rusa officers near the Verulam Train Station on Todd Street. R40 in cash was recovered in his pants pocket.

The suspects informed officers that they were given the warden uniform by a prison official who is known to them.

Both suspects were detained at Verulam SAPS.

Unmanned truck involved accident: Verulam -

At approximately 8am on 24tFebruary, members of Reaction Unit South Africa were dispatched to Mission Road in Verulam after receiving reports of a truck accident.

Upon arrival a Volvo horse and trailer loaded with a shipping container was found to have rolled down a hill and crashed into a dense bush. It was established that driver had stopped on a hill to unhitch the trailer when the truck began to roll and crashed into the bush.

The driver was not injured in the accident.

Motor vehicle collision: Verulam –

One person was injured following a collision at the Canelands intersection in Verulam on 27 February.

At approximately 7.15am members of Reaction Unit South Africa were dispatched to the scene after receiving several calls from passing motorists reporting the incident.

Upon arrival an Isuzu bakkie and a VW Golf 7 were found to be involved in the collision. One occupant of the Isuzu bakkie suffered moderate injuries and was treated on scene before being transported to hospital.

It is alleged that the Isuzu bakkie was travelling from Verulam in the direction of Tongaat when it collided into the VW Golf was turning into Canelands from the R102. The Isuzu bakkie then veered of the road and crashed into the centre median.
