Airport League resumes in Verulam

THE inaugural VAC Airport League 1 Challenge kicked off at the weekend with members participating in the 10km, 15km and 21,1km challenges.

The weekend saw the return of Jay and Rene Sarjooparsad, Judy Rajoo, Walter Mthembu, Ismail Gingqi and Joel and Shavir Karanjoo.

VAC chairperson Bobby Ramlagan posted his first 10km in over a year after a prolonged illness prevented him from attempting longer distances.

Vukani Maphumulo led the 21,1km challenge in a sub two-hour 1,47 ahead of Velvan Nair and Krish Naidoo, 10 minutes later.

Joyce Ngidi led the women in 2,08, ahead of Anita Sewnarain in 2,37. Jayce Moodley led the grandmaster challenge in a time of 2,48.

Dolly Shamlall and Shirley Narainsamy followed in 2,55 and 2,58 respectively, with walker Ronnie Rangasamy, Thrushka Sookoo and Pam Sookoo completing the half-marathon challenge.

The 15km run was led by Simon Blose in 1,47, ahead of another rising VAC middle-distance start Mantombi Fire.

Pam Zwane and Cynthia Zondi completed the 15km challenge finishers.

Ismail Gingqi led team VAC in the 10km run ahead of Anand Naidoo and Logan Naidoo. Christopher Peters, Judy Rajoo, Krishnee Naidoo, Dolly Moodley, Reema Harripersad, Jay Kisten, Anand Naicker, Brenda Peters, Vishnu Moodley, Rene Sarjooparsad, Queenie Naidoo, Sundree Ramlagan, Zama Ngcobo, Hemraj Shamall and other runners made the 10km challenge first leg their own.

The five-kilometre race saw Mayan and Risha Naicker continue their upward trend from four to five kilometres. Juniors Sphelele, Nomzamo Ngubane, Nana Sigubudu and Jay Sarjoparsad also completed the run.

Members are reminded that registration with Verulam Athletic club for the 2018 season has opened and KZN licences are now available.

The public is invited to join with no obligations, every Saturday at 5am and Sunday at the same time.

Saturday distances are four and eight kilometres, while Sunday distances are five, 10km, 12km and 15kms.
