Alleged drug peddlers denied bail

2018-06-14 06:02

SEVEN suspects accused of dealing in drugs were denied bail at the Verulam Magistrate’s Court on Monday, June 4.

The magistrate said that the suspects gave the police inaccurate information when asked about their physical addresses.

The man, his wife, brother, and four other men believed to be their bodyguards were arrested at their home in Phoenix.

The court heard that the suspects are allegedly part of a gang known as the Bloodz, believed to be dealing in drugs in the area.

The arrests were made in a sting operation comprising the Provincial Organised Crime Unit, the National Intervention Unit and Durban Metro police on January 26.

During a search conducted at the suspects’ house in Phoenix, police recovered 80 rock cocaine pieces, 30 Mandrax tablets, three bags of cocaine, ecstasy, and dagga.

The total value of the recovered drugs was R80 000.

A cash amount of R97 000, suspected to be the proceeds of drug sales, was also confiscated by the police.

The suspected owner of the house allegedly assaulted a police officer during the raid and resisted arrest.

Three firearms were also confiscated from the suspects.

The suspects face charges of dealing in drugs, failing to safeguard firearms, assault common, crimen injuria and resisting arrest.

KZN police spokesperson Captain Nqobile Gwala said: “The police proceeded to the same scene later where they recovered more drugs to the value of R20 000.

“A 19-year-old woman was arrested after she was found in possession of drugs which consisted of heroin, rock cocaine and Mandrax,” Gwala said.

The magistrate said the suspects failed to support their bail application with concrete evidence as to why they should be released on bail.

The magistrate also stated there was a possibility that the suspects will interfere with the judicial system and threaten witnesses.

The matter was adjourned until June 25 to give the state time to collect statements from witnesses.

The suspects will be remanded in custody until their next appearance in court.
