Alleged murderers abandon bail

THE two men charged with the murder of a Tongaat activist Zanele­ Mthuli (40) abandoned bail on their third appearance at the Verulam Magistrate’s Court on Monday, January 22.

Bheki Mkhize (28), and Thembela Magaqa (23) are facing charges of kidnapping, rape, murder and robbery.

They allegedly abducted Mthuli from her house in Umbhayi Informal Settlement while she her three children were asleep on December 25, 2017.

The deceased was allegedly raped and murdered by the two.

They told the court their lives would not be safe if they got bail.

North Coast residents protested asking the court to give them a heavy sentence.

The mother of the deceased, Phumephi (69), told the Weekly her daughter was the family bread winner and said she is struggling to take care of her three grandchildren.

Ward councillor Dolly Munien condemned women and child abuse.

“We hope the court will do everything possible to get all the facts, which will provide some relief for the family.

“It’s all in the hands of the court, all we have to do is to support the Mthuli family at this difficult time. I would like to thank residents for supporting the Mthuli family.”

The case was adjourned to March 20. The suspects are remanded in custody at Westville Prison until their next appearance in court.
