A MAN (50) accused of raping an 11-year-old girl in Tongaat is due to appear at the Verulam Magistrate’s Court today, November 23.

According to the report from Tongaat SAPS, the suspect allegedly raped the victim at her home on November 12.

SAPS Tongaat spokesperson Captain Patrick Ngwane said: “The victim explained everything to the suspect’s wife and also said that the suspect had raped her previously.”

An attempted rape docket was opened and the suspect was arrested.

“A case was then assigned to the SAPS detectives to conduct an investigation and obtain statements from the witnesses.

“Investigations confirmed that the suspect had raped the victim in the past. The station commander Colonel Santha Moodley praised the SAPS Crime Prevention members for their quick response that led to the swift arrest of the suspect,” Ngwane explained.

Ngwane said SAPS Tongaat are concerned about increasing number of rape and assault cases reported at station during this period.

“The station commander warned parents to be extra careful as we are approaching festive season and to look after their children,” Ngwane said.

SAPS are sending a stern warning to all parents not to leave children alone at home.

Ngwane said during the season many people who abuse alcohol are aggressive and commit serious crimes such as rapes, assault and other serious offences.

“Police will be deployed on the road to ensure that festive season goes safely. Anyone who will be found by the police to be drunk, causing havoc in public will be arrested. The safety of the community is of paramount importance and is taken seriously by all members.”
